Autologous serum tears are eye drops prepared from a patient’s own blood through a specialized process. Our Westwood doctors may discuss them for selected patients with significant dry eye or ocular surface needs after reviewing the examination and previous treatment response.
Why they may be considered
Serum drops differ from standard artificial tears. They may be considered as part of a broader management plan when conventional approaches have not provided enough support. Your doctor discusses the rationale, alternatives and whether your eye and general health make this a reasonable option.
Preparation and coordination
The process involves a blood collection and preparation through an appropriate provider. We explain how the prescription and collection are coordinated, the expected supply process and how follow-up will work. Ask our office about current arrangements and costs.
Storage and safe use
Handling, storage and the time each bottle may be used are important. Follow the preparing provider’s instructions and your doctor’s prescribed schedule exactly. Do not share drops or use a bottle beyond its instructed use period. Contact your doctor if you develop worsening irritation or signs of infection.
