AT VILLAGE EYES OPTOMETRY

When the eye surface is exposed

Exposure keratopathy is damage to the cornea when the eyelids and tear film do not adequately protect it. Incomplete eyelid closure, reduced blinking or eyelid position changes can leave the surface vulnerable to drying.

Symptoms and assessment

Discomfort, grittiness, redness, light sensitivity or blurred vision may occur. Your doctor checks eyelid closure, blinking and the cornea, and looks for the cause of the exposure. Symptoms on waking may be a useful clue to discuss.

Protecting the cornea

Care may include lubricating drops or ointment and measures to protect the surface. Some patients need treatment of an eyelid or nerve problem. Your doctor will explain which approach is suitable; do not tape or patch an eye without guidance.

When to seek prompt care

New difficulty closing an eye, significant pain, light sensitivity or reduced vision needs prompt assessment. Untreated exposure can lead to infection, ulceration or scarring.
