Meibomian gland dysfunction
Tiny glands along each eyelid release oil onto your tears. When the openings become blocked or the oil thickens, tears can evaporate more quickly.

Eyes may feel gritty or hot late in the day. Vision can fluctuate while reading and briefly clear after a blink. Some people have tender lid edges or recurring bumps. The same sensations can also have other causes.
Looking at the glands
We examine the gland openings and the quality of the oil they release. Infrared imaging with the OCULUS Keratograph 5M can show the structure of the glands beneath the lids. We interpret those images alongside tear stability and your symptoms.
Choosing a treatment
If thickened oil is part of the problem, your doctor may recommend a home warming routine or in-office heat and gland expression. OptiLight IPL is another option for selected patients. The choice depends on your exam, prior care and treatment goals.
Can I have both low tear volume and a gland problem?
Yes. Your doctor can evaluate oil flow and tear volume at the same visit and explain which finding to address first.
